The AStA — a huge apparatus
AStA — what is that? "AStA" is an acronym for Allgemeiner Studierenden Ausschuss, which means "General Student Council". It is elected once a year by the student parliament and "administers the affairs of the student body" according to the university law of the state Berlin. In the first instance, this means that it scoops up money from the students every semester — 7 Euro from each to be exact. Consequently the AStA disposes of about 550,000 Euro per year. International and Immigrant Students
The International and Immigrant Student Board ("AusländerInnen"referat) is an autonomous department within the General Student Council (AStA). As such it is elected by the plenary meeting of the "foreign" students at the Free University of Berlin. Our task is the political representation and active support of non-German students. Our goals are fighting the open and institutional racism in university and society as well as cutting off the discrimination against immigrants and international students. More...

ACHTUNG! Tuee Hochschulberatung findet mit Beginn der Vorlesungszeit montags und freitags statt.
The Counseling in University Matters of the AStA FU gives advice on various problems concerning university and studying. Typical issues are "Prüfungsberatung", "Abschlussberatung", graduation, change of programs and every kind of incorrectness or violation of rules on by the university or its members, especially if they cause disadvantages for students. Consultation in English language is available! For special problems of non-german students the students union also offers an extra counseling service, the "AusländerInnenberatung".
El consejo universitario de la union des estudiantes (AStA) ayuda con varios problemas con la universidad o los estudios. Temas tipicas son "Abschlussberatung", "Prüfungsberatung", cambio de carrera y cada violacion de las reglas universitarias que discrimina a los estudiantes. Se habla espanol! Por los estudiantes intercambios o extranjeros y sus problemas especiales (Visa etc.) existe tambien otro servicio de consejo, la "AusländerInnenberatung".
Boards
The AStA consists of twelve boards that are elected by the student parliament. The last four boards are each respectively elected by the plenary meetings of international and immigrant students, women, lesbians and gays, and are confirmed by the student parliament.
